      Dune is an epic tale of intrigue, adventure, and mysticism. Scott Brick delivers a masterful performance of this science fiction classic. Fans of Dune will find this audiobook a new way to enjoy the work. Those who have never read science fiction or who haven't yet come to the planet Dune have a treat in store. All will find the quality of the narration equal to the level of the storytelling. Brick is like a historian of the planet Dune, expressing a passion for the peoples and cultures he describes. The alien place and people names sound as natural as if he had recited them many times. The glossary presented at the end of the book is perhaps more useful in print but certainly not a reason to miss out on the audio format. J.E.M.       The Dune books of Frank Herbert created a complex and rich world of political intrigue and maneuverings. In this first of the prequel trilogy written by Herbert's son and Kevin Anderson, the authors provide some "historical" background just as rich with intrigue. As a narrator, Michael Prichard is detached, without being disengaged. His voices for the primary characters are reflective of their position, power, and personality. He adopts an impervious tone fitting of the emperor's scheming son and devious advisers. Others with more subtle ways of wielding power are suitably subtle in their manner and tone.       There's nothing fancy about this reading of a great classic of modern science fiction, but it's effective nonetheless. Anyone intending to see the confusing movie should listen to this, or read the book, first. The story: Paul Atriedes might be the long-awaited Prophet of the dry planet, Dune; great royal houses are after him to kill him and make it not so. George Guidall's impeccably restrained reading ably brings forth the humor and danger that often lie just below the surface like the planet's sand worms. This prose is well suited to being read aloud, and this production makes the book easily accessible to newcomers and Dune fanatics.
